Iraqi lawmakers say they plan Tuesday to try to resolve a stalemate about power-sharing proposals for the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.
Lawmakers are scheduled to vote on a draft local elections law that, in its present form, would allocate seats in Kirkuk's provincial council equally among the city's different ethnic groups - Kurds, Arabs and Turkomen. But Iraqi Kurds and their allies want to keep their majority in the assembly.
On Sunday, Kurdish lawmaker Mahmoud Osman told VOA Kurdish Service parliament received a proposal that could be a basis for an agreement among the political groups. He did not release any specific details.
In other news, the U.S. military says roadside bombs Monday killed two American soldiers and wounded another in Baghdad.
Also, Iraqi police say a roadside bomb targeting an Iraqi army patrol killed a soldier and a civilian and wounded nine others in the capital.
South of Baghdad, police say seven people were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in the town of Mahaweel.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Separately, coalition forces say they have captured an alleged al-Qaida in Iraq leader and seven additional suspects in Kirkuk and Mosul since Sunday.
