Two Sudanese courts have issued death sentences to 22 alleged members
of a Darfur rebel group that attacked the Sudanese capital, Khartoum,
in May.
A court Thursday sentenced 10 alleged members of the
rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) to death by hanging. Three
others were transferred to a juvenile tribunal.
A second court condemned 12 men to death, also by hanging. The defendants have one week to make an appeal.
The two court rulings raise the number of people convicted and sentenced to death in connection with the May 10 attack to 30.
Another court gave death sentences to eight convicts on Tuesday.
Sudan
set up four special courts to try dozens of suspects rounded up after
the attack on Khartoum and its twin city Omdurman. More than 200
people were killed in the rebel group's first ever attack on the
capital.
The JEM says the special courts are illegal.
