Tokyo's Nikkei index lost 85 points, to finish at 13.857.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 27 points, to end at 22.772.
Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Shanghai, Singapore and Taipei. Stocks closed slightly higher in Wellington.
The dollar was selling at 107.41 yen in Tokyo currency trading, up from 107.25 yen late Friday in New York.
