Nepalese officials say the country's prime minister has asked the Maoists to form a new government.
Nepal's Peace Minister Ram Chandra Poudel told reporters in Kathmandu Saturday that Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala asked the former rebels to begin forming a coalition government, after the Maoists won the most seats in April's election of a new constituent assembly.
Maoist leaders and the prime minister plan to discuss details during a meeting on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Nepal's newly-elected constituent assembly will meet for the first time on Wednesday, May 28. Lawmakers are expected to begin work to abolish the centuries-old monarchy, and draft a new constitution.
The Maoists agreed to a peace deal with Nepal's government in 2006, after a decade-long civil war that claimed at least 13,000 lives.
