Every year millions of unwanted dogs and cats in the U.S. are brought to animal shelters, where the hope is that they will be adopted. The reality is that about half of them will be euthanized, because there are simply not enough homes for them. Dealing with abandoned, abused and unwanted pets is a public health and safety issue that concerns most local governments in the U.S. But the task would be immensely more difficult if it were not for the support and expertise of privately funded animal rescue clinics.
