The communications director for Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is taking over as her campaign's chief strategist. The man who previously held the job resigned Sunday over his support for an international trade deal opposed by Clinton.
Senator Clinton's campaign says communications director Howard Wolfson will plan and coordinate her election strategy with help from pollster Geoff Garin.
He succeeds Mark Penn, who stepped down as chief strategist over the trade deal controversy.
Penn met last month at the Colombian Embassy in Washington with officials who hired his lobbying firm to press U.S. lawmakers to vote in favor of a trade deal between the U.S. and Colombia.
Clinton, who is in a fight for the Democratic presidential nomination with Illinois Senator Barack Obama, says she intends to vote against the trade deal.
Penn called the meeting at the Colombian Embassy an error in judgment.
He will continue to do polling and advise the Clinton campaign.
The government of Colombia responded to Penn's apology by ending its contract with his public relations firm.
