Chavez Ridicules Investigation of Alleged Links to FARC

update

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has ridiculed an investigation into his possible ties to the Colombian rebel group, FARC.

Colombian officials say computer files found during their raid on a FARC rebel camp inside Ecuador early this month link Mr. Chavez to the group. The international police organization Interpol is investigating the files.

Mr. Chavez said during a national address Monday that computer files are not trustworthy, and he joked that people should not be surprised if pictures turn up showing him with al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

Venezuela and Ecuador broke diplomatic ties with Colombia three weeks ago after it staged the cross-border attack on FARC rebels inside Ecuador.

The crisis has since eased and ties have been restored.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
