President Bush is in Liberia for the last stop on his five-nation tour of Africa.
Mr. Bush and his wife Laura landed Thursday in the capital of Monrovia. He will hold talks with his counterpart Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf before returning to Washington.
Wednesday, Mr. Bush praised Mrs. Johnson-Sirleaf as an example of the African continent's progress on democracy. Mrs. Johnson-Sirleaf took office in 2006 as Africa's first elected female president.
Liberia was founded in 1847 by freed slaves from the United States, and its capital is named after James Monroe, the fifth U.S. president
Mr. Bush arrived in Liberia after a stop in Ghana Wednesday for talks with counterpart John Kufour.
During his visit, he said the United States is not contemplating building new miliary bases on the African continent.
He said a new U.S. regional command for Africa, known as AFRICOM, is meant to help African armies better respond to conflict without the need for outside forces.
The Bushes have also visited Benin, Rwanda and Tanzania on their African tour.
