Thousands of Kenyans gathered Saturday for the funeral of an opposition lawmaker whose death last week triggered a wave of ethnic killings.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga was among the mourners in western Kenya for the burial of David Kimutai Too. The legislator was killed by a traffic police officer last week.
Authorities say the officer believed Too was involved with his girlfriend, but opposition party members call the killing an assassination.
In other news, negotiators say Kenya's feuding political parties are making progress towards resolving the crisis over December's presidential election.
Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is mediating the talks. He says the government and opposition agree that a settlement is needed to end the violence.
The fighting has killed 1,000 people across Kenya and displaced some 300,000 others.
Mr. Annan told reporters Friday that he hopes the two sides can settle their political issues by early next week.
Kenya's opposition says President Mwai Kibaki rigged the presidential vote to secure his re-election. The opposition has demanded that Mr. Kibaki resign, but on Thursday, opposition leader Odinga said his side is "not static on that point."
