US-Led Forces Kill 15 Militants in Central Iraq

The U.S. military says coalition forces in central Iraq have killed 15 suspected terrorists in operations against al-Qaida networks.

The military says the operation began Sunday with U.S.-led forces targeting a suspected al-Qaida meeting place near the town of Khalis. It says the coalition forces called in air strikes for support and detained 12 suspects.

In a separate incident, the U.S. military said Monday, that its forces accidentally killed nine Iraqi civilians during an operation Saturday against al-Qaida in Iskandariyah, south of Baghdad. Locals said the civilians were killed in U.S. airstrikes.

U.S. officials offered condolences to the families of those killed and said the incident is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Turkey's military says its warplanes attacked about 70 suspected Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq Monday.

Iraqi security forces say Turkish aircraft hit three villages known to be Kurdish rebel strongholds near the Turkish border. There were no reports of casualties.

Turkey has conducted several cross-border raids in recent months targeting Kurdish rebel strongholds.
