Interior Ministry officials in Algeria say a suicide car bomb attack at a police station east of Algiers has killed at least two people and wounded about 20 others. Officials earlier had a slightly higher death toll.
The attack occurred Tuesday nearly 60 kilometers from the capital in the city of Thenia. Officers opened fire on the bomber's vehicle as it sped toward the station. The blast caused major damage to the area around the police station.
Early this month in a similar incident, attackers rammed a car packed with explosives into a police station in the town of Naciria, killing four policemen and wounding 20 people.
Twin suicide bombings early last December at U.N. offices and a government building killed nearly 40 people in Algiers.
Al-Qaida's north African branch claimed responsibility for both attacks.
Islamists in Algeria rose up against the government in 1992 after it scrapped elections that an Islamic party was poised to win.
