The U.S. military in Iraq says coalition soldiers killed two insurgents and captured several others who were responsible for planting improvised explosive devices northeast of Baghdad.
In a statement Wednesday, the military said the detainees were netted in a raid Tuesday in a suburb of Baquba, in Diyala province. It said a firefight ensued, and no coalition forces were hurt.
In a separate statement Wednesday, the military said it received a report that one Iraqi police officer was killed and nine other officers were injured in an ambush.
That attack occurred Tuesday, north of the capital in Salah ad Din. Further details were not available.
Separately, in Baquba, Iraqi police say a suicide bomber killed about 10 people and wounded 20 others on Wednesday.
They say the blast happened at a checkpoint manned by a U.S.-backed volunteer group that has turned against al-Qaida.
The U.S. military says four people were killed in the attack.
That discrepancy has not been reconciled.
In another development, U.S. military spokesman, Major General Kevin Bergner said Wednesday that coalition forces killed or captured 51 senior al-Qaida terrorists in Iraq last month.
He says the militants include al-Qaida emirs, cell leaders, media and propaganda specialists and foreign terrorist coordinators. The military spokesman says the militants also include spiritual advisers, financiers, intelligence gatherers and weapons traffickers.
