The Sudanese army says eight of its soldiers have been killed and 19 others wounded in a clash with Darfur rebels backed by troops from neighboring Chad.
Army spokesman Osman Mohammed al-Aghbash says the clash occurred earlier this week in the Silayya region of western Darfur.
He says the rebels attacked government troops in the area using dozens of vehicles. The spokesman says the army pushed the attackers back while inflicting unspecified losses.
There has been no outside confirmation of the report.
This is the third time in recent days Sudan has accused Chad of carrying out attacks in Darfur.
Chad has acknowleged conducting an air attack in Darfur late last week. It says the attack was aimed at Sudanese mercenaries.
Tensions between Chad and Sudan have been running high for more than a year because of unrest on both sides of the border. Both countries have accused the other of supporting rebels on the other's soil.
