American tennis player Andy Roddick has given the United States a 1-0 lead over Russia in the Davis Cup tennis finals by beating Dmitry Tursunov in Portland, Oregon.
Roddick fired 25 aces and had only four double faults to beat Tursunov in three sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. The sixth-ranked American improved to 6-0 in Davis Cup play this year.
The second match features No. 13 James Blake of the United States taking on Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.
The doubles are Saturday when top-ranked Bob and Mike Bryan of the United States take on Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev of Russia. The reverse singles are Sunday.
The United States has won a record 31 Davis Cup titles, but has not captured the trophy since 1995, when Pete Sampras led the U.S. team to victory on clay in Moscow.
