Jaffer shared prosperous partnerships with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar after opener Dinesh Kartik fell for one in the second over.
Jaffer anchored the second-wicket partnership of 136 with Dravid, who had 50, and then a 175-run stand for the third wicket with Tendulkar, who tallied 82. Dravid's 117-ball knock contained seven boundaries.
India won the opening test of this three-match series by six wickets.
