Pop crooner Frankie Valli reached the pinnacle of success in the 1960s as the lead singer of The Four Seasons. But, as VOA's Doug Levine tells us, Valli is enjoying a welcome comeback that includes a new album of some old favorites.
When Frankie Valli parted ways with The Four Seasons, fans feared they would never hear his signature falsetto voice ever again. Within a few years, however, Valli was back on top of the charts with a string of solo hits in the 1970s.
The next two decades were Valli's leanest. He performed on and off with The Four Seasons, and made an occasional solo recording. But with the opening of the hit Broadway musical Jersey Boys in 2005, the spotlight returned. The Tony Award-winning show, featuring four young actors recreating the story of The Four Seasons, inspired the "original" New Jersey boy, Frankie Valli, to record his first album in more than 20 years.
Valli marks his return to the studio with a collection of classic pop songs from the 1960s. On Romancing The '60s, he tackles tunes by some the decade's most notable performers, including Bobby Hebb, Chris Montez, Stevie Wonder, Ben E. King, Bobby Vee, The Temptations and others.
Valli even pays tribute to his own glory days of the '60s with an update of The Drifters' "On Broadway," featuring the original Broadway cast of Jersey Boys.
