Rapper Kanye West's mother may have died of complications related to a surgical procedure, according a Los Angeles-area coroner's official.
Speaking on November 12 to the Associated Press, Lt. Fred Corral said preliminary information from officials at Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center indicated that Donda West died from "complications of surgery."
An autopsy is scheduled for November 14, Corral said. Patricia Green, a consultant who had previously worked as a publicist for West, had earlier told news agencies that West died following cosmetic surgery. She amended those comments in later interviews with the AP, saying conflicting information caused her to be unsure of surgery. He told West two weeks ago that he was concerned about a condition which may cause a heart attack during surgery, and wanted West to obtain medical clearance. Geffen said West never responded to his request.
Donda West, who died at age 58, was often seen at her son's side at parties and awards shows.
The rapper often spoke of his close relationship with his mother, who raised him alone after her husband left when Kanye was three. The former chairwoman of Chicago State University's English department, Donda West served as chief executive of West Brands LLC, the parent company of her son's business enterprises. She also chaired the Kanye West Foundation, an educational nonprofit working to decrease dropout rates and improve literacy.
