The Iraqi Red Crescent says nearly 2.3 million Iraqis - mostly women and children - have fled their homes in Iraq and remain displaced within the country.
In a report Monday, the Iraqi Red Crescent said the majority of the displaced suffer from disease, poverty and malnutrition. It says most of the displaced are in Baghdad.
The report says children do not attend schools and many are being sheltered buildings with no water or electricity.
Separately, Sunni officials from Anbar province are asking U.S troops to remain in Anbar, as both Iraqi and U.S. officials declare that al-Qaida is almost defeated in the former insurgent stronghold.
Sunni leaders in Anbar are also asking U.S. officials to provide funding to build up the province's security forces and economy.
Iraqi tribal leaders united with U.S. forces to combat the terrorists in a campaign knows as the Anbar Awakening.
In violence Monday, a roadside bomb in eastern Baghdad killed one person and wounded at least three others. In western Baghdad, authorities say assailants shot and killed a member of the Khadra neighborhood council.
Separately, the U.S. military says coalition forces killed five terrorists and detained 30 suspects in operations today targeting al-Qaida networks in central and northern Iraq.
