Chinese security officials have staged a mock terrorist attack as part of a drill in Shanghai's port to prepare the city for attacks during next year's Olympic games.
The China Daily newspaper reports that Wednesday's exercise involved five mock terrorists hiding in shipping containers at Shanghai's Yangshan Deep-Water Port.
During the drill, the "terrorists" staged a simulated attack in the port, and officials set up a local headquarters in response. The mock attackers were captured by police and a fake bomb they installed on a ship was disarmed.
The drill involved 200 officers, 45 vehicles, 13 ships and two helicopters. Shanghai will host some of the football (soccer) matches at next year's Olympics in Beijing.
The drill was the largest of its kind for Shanghai, the largest port in China. Cargo traffic increased by 15 percent between 2000 and 2006 according to the China Daily newspaper. The Olympics start August 8, 2008.
