Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf has named a temporary prime minister, a day after his political rival Ali Mohamed Gedi resigned from the post.
Mr. Yusuf appointed Mr. Gedi's former deputy, Salim Aliyow Ibrow, to fill in while he begins searching for a new, permanent prime minister.
The Associated Press Tuesday quotes Mr. Ibrow as saying Somalia has entered a "season of reconciliation" and that Somalis resolve their differences through dialogue.
Mr. Gedi's resignation Monday followed a political struggle with the president, who had accused him of failing to end the Islamist-led insurgency in the capital, Mogadishu, and failing to draft a new constitution.
By law, Mr. Yusuf has 30 days to name a new prime minister. He has promised to consult with lawmakers before making his choice.
The government's main backer, Ethiopia, welcomed Mr. Gedi's resignation and said it is pleased that political tensions have been amicably resolved.
The transitional Somali government still faces a strong insurgency in the capital that has killed thousands of people. The country has other problems, including rampant piracy off the coast and a humanitarian crisis that has left hundreds of thousands of Somalis dependent on international aid.
