Nine Republican candidates for the U.S. presidency faced each other in a debate Tuesday in which they discussed, among other things, how they would handle the Iran situation.
Former Senator Fred Thompson, Senator John McCain, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani all said they would consult Congress before taking military action on Iran, which has been at odds with much of the western world over its nuclear activities.
Questioned about the economy, several candidates said the federal government must cut spending. McCain praised President Bush for his recent veto of a children's health bill.
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said the economy of the debate's host state - Michigan - is in trouble because of the ailing U.S. automaking industry. He said national leaders must come together to solve what he called a "one-state recession."
Michigan is home to the Ford Motor Company and General Motors.
