Snoop Dogg pleaded guilty on September 20 to one count of felony possession of a dangerous weapon. His attorney said the rapper received a sentence of 160 hours of community service and three years probation.
Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr., was arrested in September 2006 after a collapsible police baton was found in his computer bag at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. Authorities said it was a dangerous weapon, while the 35-year-old rapper claimed it was a prop for a video he was shooting in New York.
His attorney, Donna Etra, said the felony conviction would be reduced to a misdemeanor after one year if Snoop Dogg does not violate the law. She said he was also ordered to make a $10,000 charitable donation. "We are very pleased with the outcome," Etra said. "Snoop's goal is to make music, not make court appearances."
Under the deal, Broadus cannot work with gangs, children, or his nonprofit youth football league. Deputy District Attorney Andre Manssourian said "the spirit of the community service offer is for him to do the work in a manner in which he isn't glorified in the eyes of children."
Broadus and his attorneys must submit a community service proposal by October 4. The case is Broadus' second in the past year. He was arrested on October 26 at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California on suspicion of transporting marijuana. Police later found a gun at his home.
The rapper pleaded no contest in April to felony gun and marijuana charges. He agreed to five years probation and 800 hours of community service.
