Little Progress at Talks on US-Indian Nuclear Deal

A joint committee of India's government and its leftist allies met Wednesday to resolve differences over a controversial nuclear deal with the United States.

Members of India's communist party say they are not convinced by the government's response to their objections to the deal.

The communists are urging Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to delay implementation of the agreement for six months.

India's leftists say the nuclear deal would undermine New Delhi's independent foreign policy by bringing India too close to the United States.

Communist Party leader Prakash Karat has already threatened to stop supporting Mr. Singh's government, if it pushes the U.S. nuclear deal through parliament.

Mr. Singh's ruling coalition could collapse without the backing of parliament's four communist parties.

The deal aims to give India access to American nuclear fuel and equipment to help it meet soaring energy needs, even though India has tested nuclear weapons and not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
