Serbian PM Calls on EU to Warn Against Kosovo Independence

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has urged the international community and the European Union to warn against a unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence.

Mr. Kostunica said a unilateral step by Kosovo ethnic Albanian leaders would threaten peace and stability in the region, and be a violation of the United Nations charter. He spoke in Brussels after a meeting with European Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering.

Mr. Kostunica also said that Serbia is not a threat to anyone. But he said statements in favor of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence are a threat to Serbia.

Serbia and its breakaway Kosovo province are engaged in a series of talks on the future status of the province, which has been under U.N. administration for eight years.

The talks are to end by December 10. The two sides remain entrenched in their positions. Serbia is offering Kosovo broad autonomy within Serbia. Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leaders insist on independence, which they say they will proclaim after the current talks end.
