Pioneering Austrian jazz pianist Joe Zawinul - founder of the jazz-rock group Weather Report - has died.
Hospital officials say Zawinul died Tuesday in Vienna at age 75. Austrian media reports say he had been suffering from cancer.
Zawinul founded the group Weather Report with saxophonist Wayne Shorter which pioneered the fusion between traditional jazz and the electronic instruments of rock.
Weather Report won critical acclaim, numerous awards, and fans around the world.
Prior to the group's founding, Zawinul was famous in jazz circles for his work with such stars as Dinah Washington and Cannonball Adderley.
