Thousands of ethnic Albanians have marched through Kosovo's capital, Pristina, to protest the killing of a police officer last week.
The demonstrators carried photographs of the officer, Triumf Riza, who was shot to death in a parking lot. Reaction to the shooting has highlighted citizens' frustration with the high rate of crime in the area.
The United Nations administrator of Kosovo, Joachim Ruecker, released a statement expressing full support for the demonstrators. He called the murder of the policeman "a heinous crime and a terrible tragedy." He said the outpouring of emotion after Riza's death is a sign that the people of Kosovo do not accept crime and violence.
Kosovo has been under U.N. administration since 1999.
