Deadly Fighting With Taleban Rebels in Eastern Afghanistan

Police in Afghanistan say three foreign soldiers and two Afghan troops were killed Monday in fighting with Taleban militants in the east.

Officials say the violence erupted after a Taleban ambush in Kunar province near the Afghan border with Pakistan.

The deaths have not been confirmed by the U.S. military or NATO.

On Sunday, two soldiers with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed while on patrol in Afghanistan.

NATO officials say one was a 30-year-old sergeant from the Netherlands, killed Sunday by a bomb in southern Uruzgan province.

Separately, another soldier was killed while on patrol in eastern Afghanistan. The soldier's nationality was not released.

About 50,000 NATO and U.S.-led coalition troops are battling a resurgent Taleban movement and helping with reconstruction projects in Afghanistan.

Of those, roughly 1,700 are Dutch troops participating in NATO's mission.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
