Witnesses in Burma say about 50 people have held a march to protest a fuel price hike, despite the military's sweeping arrests of activists last week.
Witnesses say plainclothes police officers watched Monday as citizens marched through the streets of Bago. Some sources quote witnesses as saying police did not intervene. But the French news agency reports that the protesters were detained and taken for questioning, then released.
Bago is about 70 kilometers from Rangoon, where larger protests took place last week against the government's decision to double the price of fuel.
The military-run government says it arrested about 50 activists last week.
Reports say 13 leading activists detained in the crackdown have been moved to Burma's notorious Insein prison, outside Rangoon. The prominent pro-democracy leader Min Ko Naing is among them.
Burma's government has been widely criticized for human rights violations, including the extended detention of pro-democracy opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and more than 1,200 other political prisoners.
