Tropical Storm Pabuk Soaks Philippines, Lashes Taiwan and Heads to China

Tropical storm Pabuk has triggered deadly landslides in the Philippines, and has lashed Taiwan as it heads toward China's southeastern province of Guangdong.

Officials in the Philippines say Pabuk bolstered monsoon rains, triggering landslides that killed at least 11 people there.

As the storm passed over the south of Taiwan, it disrupted transportation and electricity, forcing the closure of schools and offices.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency says residents in southeastern China are bracing for the storm. Forecasters expect Pabuk will make landfall in Guangdong province later Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Taiwan issued a new land and sea warning Wednesday as a second tropical storm, Wutip, headed toward the island's eastern coast.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau says Wutip was about 250 kilometers east of Taiwan's southern tip late Wednesday, traveling at a speed of 22 kilometers per hour.

The storm had gusts of wind up to 90 kilometers an hour. Forecasters expect Wutip to reach Taiwan by Thursday.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
