Bomb Blast Kills Four in Baghdad Shopping Area

update

Iraqi police say a car bomb exploded in eastern Baghdad Saturday, killing at least four people and wounding 10 others.

The blast occurred in a crowded shopping area.

Separately, the U.S. military in Iraq says coalition forces have captured 16 suspected terrorists during raids Saturday targeting al-Qaida in Iraq.

Troops carried out in two synchronized raids in the town of Tarmiyah. At least five insurgents were captured - including a suspected al-Qaida-linked judge. Six suspected terrorists were arrested in two coordinated raids south of Tarmiyah.

The military also arrested five terror suspects during a raid in Samarra. One of them is an alleged terrorist leader with ties to the local al-Qaida in Iraq emir.

On the political front, Iraqi's government has criticized the country's largest Sunni bloc for suspending its participation in the government and threatening to withdraw completely.

On Wednesday the bloc, known as the Iraqi Accordance Front, gave Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki one week to meet its demands to deal with Shi'ite militias and reform the way raids and arrests are conducted. It has been boycotting Cabinet meetings since June to protest legal proceedings against Culture Minister Asad Kamal al-Hashimi, who is accused of arranging to have another politician killed.
