South Europe Heat Wave, British Floods Claim More Lives

update

Hundreds of Greek firefighters and soldiers are battling more than 200 wildfires that have killed at least three people and destroyed dozens of homes, as a devastating heat wave continues to grip much of southern Europe.

While temperatures dropped across the region Thursday, strong winds fanned Greece's fires for a fourth day.

In northern Italy, where thousands of hectares of land have burned in recent weeks, environmental authorities say most fires burning this week were deliberately set.

Temperatures remained moderate in Hungary for a second straight day, after days of near record-setting heat claimed more than 500 lives. Romania has reported more than 30 deaths in recent days.

In flood-ravaged western England, British authorities say two people have died while trying to pump water out of a rugby club. The region - reeling from the worst flooding in 60 years - braced for more rain Thursday.

About 350,000 people in Britain were still without running water Thursday, as health experts seek to ensure the safety of water supplies contaminated in the deluge.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
