A terror suspect detained by Australian police has denied advance knowledge of last month's foiled car-bombings in Britain.
The Australian newspaper Wednesday posted on the Internet a leaked transcript of a police interview with Mohamed Haneef. One of Haneef's lawyers has said he is the source of the document.
Australian police - Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty - criticized the leak as potentially jeopardizing Haneef's trial but did not question the transcript's accuracy.
In the document, Haneef says he tried unsuccessfully to call British police four times after being told someone had misused a phone card he left with cousins before moving to Australia.
The two cousins, Kafeel and Sabeel Ahmed, have been charged in connection with the Glasgow airport attack.
Australian police arrested Haneef as he was leaving the country for India, and 12 days later charged him with supporting the suspects of a failed car-bomb attack on Glasgow airport.
The Internet posting comes after lawyers criticized Australia's detaining Haneef on immigration violations just hours after a Brisbane magistrate had granted him bail. The lawyers called Australia's revoking of Haneef's work visa a politically motivated tactic.
India's foreign ministry has voiced concern over Australia's treatment Haneef. A foreign ministry spokesman said Tuesday that India has asked the Australian government to ensure that Haneef is treated fairly under Australian law.
