Deputy District Commissioner in Somalia Killed

Another Somali government official has been gunned down in a neighborhood in the capital, Mogadishu.

Police say Deputy District Commissioner Osman Ali was killed late Monday by two unknown men armed with pistols.

Ali was the commissioner of the Huriwa district, north of the capital.

Several government officials have been assassinated in the capital in recent weeks. A government worker was gunned down Saturday morning. A former intelligence officer and a court official were killed by unknown gunmen in May.

The government has been unable to stop the violence in Mogadishu since declaring victory last month over Islamists insurgents.

The violence between insurgents and an alliance of government and Ethiopian troops has left more than 1,300 people dead since February.

Somalia has not had an effective central government in 16 years, since warlords toppled dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
