An edgy musical about teenagers in 19th-Century Germany emerged the big winner at the 61st annual Tony Awards ceremony. Spring Awakening, which centers around adolescent sexuality, collected eight awards at the June 10 gala in New York City's Radio City Music Hall. Among its honors were best musical and best score, given to Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik.
Taking top drama was Tom Stoppard's The Coast of Utopia, a three-part look at Russian intellectuals. Between them, Spring Awakening and The Coast of Utopia received 15 of the evening's 25 competitive awards.
Other winners include Frank Langella, Best Leading Actor for Frost/Nixon; Julie White, Best Leading Actress for The Little Dog Laughed; David Hyde Pierce, Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Curtains; and Christine Ebersol, Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Grey Gardens.
