Coalition Forces in Iraq say three U.S. soldiers were killed and six wounded Sunday when a suicide bomber struck the checkpoint they were manning south of Baghdad.
The military said Sunday that the blast brought down part of a highway overpass, trapping the soldiers in the rubble.
A Coalition statement Monday said an engineer unit was dispatched with bulldozers and other heavy equipment to clear a highway that was partially blocked by the wreckage.
That blast took place close to where 12 Iraqi soldiers were killed Saturday when a suicide bomber drove a truck into a Iraqi army checkpoint near the city of Iskandariya.
Also on Sunday, Iraqi authorities said a suicide truck bomber killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 50 others at a police station north of Baghdad.
Most of the blast victims near the northern city of Tikrit were policemen.
The U.S. military also announced Sunday the death of a U.S. soldier in fighting in a southern section of Baghdad.
