German police say they have arrested more than 250 protesters Thursday near a security fence outside the Baltic sea resort hosting world leaders at the Group of Eight summit.
Police had also intercepted two speedboats carrying environmental protesters trying to penetrate security at the summit in Heiligendamm.
Police pursued the boats in a dramatic chase that ended when a boat carrying security officials rammed one carrying activists from the environmental group Greenpeace. Several activists ended up in the water, but no serious injuries were reported.
A spokesman for the group said the protesters were trying to deliver a petition to the summit calling for climate protection measures.
