A top American science and technology university is holding a competition for a design of Jerusalem that would promote peaceful co-existence between all groups, whether Jewish, Christian or Muslim.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says its competition, called "Just Jerusalem, is aimed at finding a city design that would allow "contending ideas and citizenries" to live in peace.
Contestants will say how they envision a Jerusalem of the future - as a capital of two states or of one, as an international city or other - and then will explain why that would promote peace and sustainability.
Israel captured Arab East Jerusalem in 1967, annexing it and declaring a united Jerusalem as its eternal capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Registration for the competition begins March 31. Winners will be announced in March 2008 and are to receive a fellowship at the university worth $50,000.
