The U.S. military in Iraq says a roadside bomb explosion in eastern Baghdad has killed four American soldiers and wounded two others.
A statement says two bombs went off Thursday as the soldiers were returning from a search operation. The second explosion caused the U.S. casualties.
U.S. officials say a third bomb was found at the scene and detonated in a controlled explosion.
The dead and wounded soldiers were assigned to an American group operating alongside Iraqi troops -- part of their combined effort to end sectarian violence in Baghdad.
Elsewhere in Baghdad Thursday, a car-bomb blast near an Iraqi military checkpoint killed eight people and wounded 25 others in a Shi'ite neighborhood of the capital. Iraqi security forces were among the casualties.
Earlier Thursday, U.S. spokesmen reported two more American deaths on Wednesday in al-Anbar province, west of the capital, a soldier who was killed during combat and a Marine who died in a non-combat-related incident (that is still under investigation.
In the town of Iskandariyah, an area south of Baghdad that has been hit frequently by Sunni Arab insurgents, a car bomb killed at least four people and wounded 24 others.
And the U.S. military says it is investigating an incident Wednesday in the northern city of Mosul, in which coalition forces killed an Iraqi soldier by mistake. An initial account indicates that coalition ground forces and a helicopter were fired on during a raid in Mosul, and they returned fire, killing one person who was later identified as a member of the Iraqi army.
