Iraqi Police: 30 People Killed by Suicide Bomber Northeast of Baghdad

Iraqi police say a suicide bomber has killed at least 30 people northeast of Baghdad.

The police say the attack took place in a cafe in the town of Balad Ruz in Diyala province.

Iraqi security officials also say at least 22 more people have been killed in Baghdad as insurgents continue to target Iraqi police as well as Shi'ite pilgrims heading to Karbala for a religious observance.

On Tuesday, about 140 Shi'ite pilgrims were killed in bombings and shootings across central Iraq.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military says a roadside bomb killed three American soldiers northwest of Baghdad Wednesday.

An al-Qaida-linked Sunni group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's jailbreak from a Mosul prison. Police said gunmen stormed the prison and freed some 140 inmates, including foreign militants.

In other news, an Iraqi Shi'ite political party said it is separating from the powerful Shi'ite coalition that dominates Iraq's parliament.

The Fadhila party, which holds 15 of the parliament's 275 seats, announced that it is withdrawing from the ruling United Iraqi Alliance.

Reports say the move could weaken the Shi'ite alliance and the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
