India Formally Asks Argentina to Extradite Corruption Suspect

India has formally asked Argentina to extradite an Italian businessman suspected of involvement in a major arms bribery scandal.

A team from India's Central Bureau of Investigation was in Argentina Thursday to file a request for to be transferred to India for trial.

India and Argentina do not have an extradition agreement.

Argentine authorities detained Quattrocchi on February 6, based on an Interpol warrant. He is accused of accepting illegal payments from Sweden's Bofors Company during a 1986 arms deal with the Indian army.

Quattrocchi has been wanted in India for years, but previous attempts to extradite him have failed. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Earlier this week, Indian opposition lawmakers demanded that New Delhi explain why it waited 17 days to reveal Quattrocchi's arrest and to seek his extradition.

The arms bribery scandal in 1986 implicated then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, whose government fell three years later. Mr. Gandhi's widow, Sonia, is now head of India's ruling coalition.
