Lesotho Ruling Party Wins Election in Landslide Victory

update

Final results Wednesday, show Lesotho's ruling party has been returned to power by an overwhelming majority following Saturday's parliamentary elections.

The Independent Electoral Commission says the Lesotho Congress for Democracy won 61 of the 80 seats contested. The opposition All Basotho Convention took 17 seats.

Another 40 parliamentary seats will be assigned on the basis of proportional representation.

The government was forced to call the early election after 18 lawmakers defected to form the All Basotho Convention in October.

The opposition group has complained of voting irregularities. The chairman of Lesotho's electoral commission, Leshele Thoahlane, says some problems occurred, but that they did not affect the outcome.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
