A suicide bomber has detonated explosives outside Islamabad's busy international airport. At least one person was killed and several others wounded. VOA correspondent Benjamin Sand reports from Pakistan.
Pakistani officials say the attack occurred late Tuesday. Brigadier Javid Iqbal Cheema, who runs the country's national crisis management agency, provided details while rushing to the airport to help launch the official investigation. "They wanted to make an entry into the airport parking and they were stopped by our security guards. There was an exchange of fire and he exploded himself," he said.
Cheema says the attacker was killed and at least two guards were injured.
Witnesses say several cars were damaged in the blast and the entire area has been cordoned off while police look for additional evidence.
Local media report the suicide bomber approached the airport in a taxi and the driver is believed to be in police custody.
This is the latest in a series of suicide bombings to hit Pakistan in recent weeks. A similar attack on one of the capital's best-known international hotels, the Marriott, left two dead and several others injured last month.
Capital police were also reportedly on high alert throughout the city, after receiving intelligence reports suggesting additional attacks were being planned by Islamist militants.
