Indonesian health officials say a six-year-old girl has died from bird flu, raising the country's death toll from the disease to at least 63.
Health officials said Thursday that the girl from Central Java had the dangerous H5N1 strain of the disease and died in a hospital on January 19.
Indonesia has suffered the largest number of human casualties from bird flu. Since 2003, the disease has killed more than 150 people worldwide.
Meanwhile, Japan's Agriculture Ministry confirmed a second outbreak of bird flu in the country's southern Miyazaki prefecture. Officials say chickens there were carrying the H5 strain of bird flu. Japan has yet to confirm whether it is the deadlier H5N1 strain of the disease.
Earlier this month, Japan confirmed its first outbreak of H5N1 in three years in the same area.
In Malaysia, officials have gone on high alert, warning of possible outbreaks of bird flu among poultry.
Malaysia suffered a wave of bird flu outbreaks early last year. The country declared itself free of bird flu in June of 2006.
