Denny Doherty, Member of Legendary 60s Rock Group, Dies

update

Denny Doherty, a founding member of the 1960s folk-rock group the Mamas and the Papas, has died at the age of 66.

Family members say Doherty passed away Friday at his home in Mississagua, Ontario - just west of Toronto. He had been suffering kidney problems after undergoing surgery.

The native of Halifax, Nova Scotia formed the Mamas and the Papas in 1965 with Americans John Phillips, his wife Michelle, and Cass Elliot. Their first big hit, "California Dreamin'," was released the next year. The group's other classic hits include "Monday, Monday," "Dedicated to the One I Love," and "Go Where You Wanna Go."

The group was beset by jealously and drug abuse off-stage, and broke up in 1968 after John and Michelle Phillips divorced. They briefly reunited in 1971.

Doherty later starred in "Theodore Tugboat", a popular Canadian children's television series.

He also developed a musical based on his years with the Mamas and the Papas.

Cass Elliot died of a heart attack in 1974. John Phillips died in 2001 at the age of 65.
