The United Nations Development Program has announced plans for an outside audit of its activities in North Korea, after allegations that the Pyongyang government diverted millions of dollars in aid for its own use.
The United States questioned whether North Korea used U.N. funds intended for impoverished people for other activities.
Separately, the top U.S. negotiator on North Korea says he expects multinational talks on Pyongyang's nuclear program to resume within weeks.
Following his arrival in Tokyo Saturday U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill said he and his North Korean counterpart (Kim Kye Kwan) agreed to reinitiate the six-party talks soon.
The talks are aimed at persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program in exchange for millions of dollars in financial aid.
The last round of the six-nation talks was held in Beijing last December.
The countries involved in the negotiations are the United States, Japan, China, Russia, South and North Korea.
North Korea conducted a nuclear weapons test in October.
