Indonesian officials say 12 people have survived a plane crash that killed 90 others when it went down in stormy weather on northern Sulawesi island Monday.
The wreckage of the Adam Air Boeing 737 was found early Tuesday in a remote mountainous region in west Sulawesi province.
The domestic flight was flying at an altitude of about 10,000 meters when it sent out distress signals Monday. The plane lost contact with air traffic controllers between the islands of Java and Sulawesi.
Six crew members and 96 passengers, including 11 children, were on board.
U.S. Embassy and airline officials say three U.S. citizens were among the passengers. It is not known whether they survived the crash.
Adam Air is a privately owned, low-cost airline that began operations in Indonesia several years ago. Most of its flights are domestic.
Last year, one of Adam Air's jetliners lost its communication and navigation systems during a flight between the capital, Jakarta, and Makassar on Sulawesi Island, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.
