The U.S. military in Iraq says coalition forces fired several tank rounds into a mosque in Ramadi Friday, after coming under attack from militants inside.
The military says the Al Qadir Al Kilami mosque in Ramadi, west of Baghdad, suffered serious structural damage to its dome and minaret. A military statement says coalition forces returned fire in self-defense only after coming under attack.
One U.S. soldier was wounded in the fighting. Iraqi officials in Ramadi said three people were killed and more than 20 wounded in the clashes.
On Thursday, the top U.S. commander in the Middle East said a U.S.-Iraqi security clampdown in Baghdad is making great progress. General John Abizaid said Iraq is far from civil war.
