Thousands of Muslims have rallied in front of the U.S. Embassy in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The anti-American protests included demands that U.S. forces pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sunday's demonstration was peaceful with more than 1,000 police on hand to make sure the 5,000 protesters stayed across the street from the embassy, which had warned Americans to avoid the area.
The protest was sponsored by the Islamic group Hizbut Tahrir. Similar, but generally smaller protests organized by the group were held in several other cities in the country.
Indonesia is a moderate Islamic country with Christian, Hindu and Buddhist minorities. It has a long tradition of secularism, and is seen by the United States as an ally in the war on terror.
