Philippine police have detained two former police officials and an opposition lawmaker, one day after President Gloria Arroyo initiated emergency measures over an alleged coup plot.
Reports from Manila say retired police generals Ramon Montano and Rex Piad were detained in the Philippine capital Saturday. Leftist congressman Crispin Beltran was also taken into custody for questioning.
Meanwhile, officials of a pro-opposition newspaper, The Daily Tribune, say authorities have raided the offices of the newspaper.
Ms. Arroyo declared a state of emergency Friday after some military officers were detained for an alleged plot to overthrow the government.
Shortly after the announcement, police used fire hoses to disperse a large group of protesters gathered near the focal point of the 1986 "People Power" revolt that unseated dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
