Cambodia's king has reduced the prison sentence of a prominent opposition figure who was jailed last year on charges he was attempting to overthrow the government.
King Norodom Sihamoni cut four years from the seven-year jail term being served by former member of parliament, Cheam Channy. The king acted Thursday on a request from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The United States had condemned the conviction of Cheam Channy and other opposition figures, saying their trials violated international standards.
In December, the United Nations human rights envoy for Cambodia, Yash Ghai, urged the government to release its jailed critics, who he said were being held in harsh conditions.
